Winter hike: Gasthof Panorama - Lärchenhütte Hut

Important notice: Proper footwear and suitable winter clothing are required for all winter hikes. Due to possible icy sections – even on groomed trails – the use of microspikes/crampons and trekking poles is recommended.

The starting point for the winter hike is the Panorama Inn (1,576 m). Cars can be parked in the car park at Mitterberg Fortress. From there, follow the paved road uphill, which is also marked as trail no. 3 to the Lärchenhütte hut.

After a short time, you will reach a crossroads at a small wooden hut. Here, stay on trail no. 3. At the following forks in the trail, always follow the signs towards the Lärchenhütte hut.

At another fork in the trail, there is a sign attached to a large larch tree. This sign only indicates the Jägerhütte hut, but stay on this trail. Now follow a wide gravel path that climbs gently in several curves. Along the way, you will enjoy beautiful views of the village of Sexten, the Sexten sundial and extensive larch fields.

After a few minutes' walk, you will pass another small wooden hut with several signposts. Here, follow the arrow pointing towards the Lärchenhütte hut and stay on trail no. 3. After a few more minutes' walk, you will cross the ski slope and see the Lärchenhütte hut (1,851 m). Descend a few metres along the slope and you will finally reach your destination.

From the Lärchenhütte hut, you can either return to the valley via the same route or continue the hike uphill to the Helmjet mountain station (2,041 m). Allow about 40 minutes for this additional climb, the last section of which runs directly along the ski slope. From the mountain station, you can then take the cable car back down to the valley. This route to the mountain station can only be taken when there is little snow.

Those arriving by bus still have an additional walk to the starting point:
From the bus stop, follow the paved road towards the Sexten parish church, pass it, and continue uphill along Kaiserstraße towards Mitterberg. After about 1.5 kilometers and 280 meters of elevation gain, you will reach the Panorama inn. You should allow about one hour of walking time for this approach.

Coming from the Puster Valley, turn off at San Candido into the Sesto Valley. Coming from the Kreuzberg Pass, follow the main road to Sexten. Pass by the parish church of Sexten and continue on an asphalt road (Kaiserstraße) towards Mitterberg. Start at Gasthof Panorama, Mitterberg 3.
