The Three Peaks in South Tyrol

They are the unmistakable landmarks of the Dolomites: the world-famous Three Peaks – known in German as the Drei Zinnen. The striking trio of rock formations, comprising the Big Peak, the Western Peak, and the Little Peak, has held the status of UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2009. But long before receiving official acclaim, these dramatic peaks had already captured the imagination of visitors from around the globe. Whether you’re a seasoned mountaineer, an eager climbing enthusiast, an avid hiker or simply a nature lover: The enduring appeal of the Three Peaks in the Sexten Dolomites continues to inspire awe and adventure in equal measure.

Getting to the Three Peaks

By car

The easiest way to reach the Three Peaks is via the toll road to the Auronzo Hut (Rifugio Auronzo). However, as the Three Peaks are located within a nature reserve, access by this route is strictly limited.

Starting point: near Lake Misurina
Road: Drei Zinnen toll road
Destination: Rifugio Auronzo car park

Please note: Access is open seasonally (usually June–October) and must be booked online in advance.

By bus & public transport

Alternatively, you can reach the Three Peaks very easily by taking the No. 444 shuttle bus from Toblach. The bus service takes you directly to the Auronzo Hut, the ideal starting point for hikes around the Three Peaks.

This travel option is particularly recommended if you want a stress-free journey and wish to avoid the hassle of finding a parking space. At the same time, using public transport is a sustainable alternative to driving and helps to protect the delicate natural environment of the Dolomites.

Especially during the high season, the shuttle bus offers a relaxed and reliable way to reach the Three Peaks.

Parking

The main car park is located right next to the Auronzo Hut and can only be accessed with a prior online booking.

Tip: Arrive early (before 7 am in high summer), as the car park fills up quickly – especially in summer!

Best time for a visit

The best time to visit the Three Peaks in the Dolomites depends largely on what you’d like to experience there. Generally speaking, the Three Peaks are an impressive destination all year round, but each season offers different conditions and experiences.

For hikers and nature lovers, the summer months from June to September are considered the ideal time to visit. During this period, the trails around the Three Peaks are usually snow-free and easily accessible, allowing you to enjoy the famous circular hike and numerous vantage points without any problems.

Autumn is also one of the most beautiful times to visit the Three Peaks. The Dolomite landscape is ablaze with vibrant colours, whilst there are fewer visitors around. If you wish to experience the Three Peaks in a peaceful atmosphere, you’ll find perfect conditions at this time of year.

In winter, the Three Peaks are set against an impressive snowy landscape, which holds particular appeal for photographers and those seeking tranquillity. However, access is restricted as the toll road leading to the Auronzo Hut is closed. We also advise that, in winter, you always check the weather and avalanche reports first before planning a hike to the Three Peaks.
